De-Escalation and OVA (Occupational Violence & Aggression) Training
The De-Escalation & OVA Training Hui was held at Hokonui Rūnanga and brought together 21 participants from across the community sector. Facilitated by Diane Watt of Resolution Education, the hui was designed to equip frontline workers with practical tools for managing conflict and staying safe in high-pressure situations.
Hosted by the Eastern Southland Suicide Postvention & Prevention Group, with funding support from the Hokonui Hauora Fund, the hui offered a mix of discussion, role-play, and scenario-based learning. Participants explored how to recognise early signs of agitation, communicate effectively, and apply strategies to de-escalate potentially challenging situations.
The day was well received, with feedback highlighting increased confidence and relevance to participants’ everyday mahi. A real-time earthquake during the session briefly disrupted the training but also served as an unexpected test of emergency preparedness. Attendees remained calm, followed safety protocols, and looked out for one another—demonstrating the very principles the training aimed to teach.
With demand already growing for future sessions, the success of this hui reflects the importance of creating safe, informed spaces for those working on the front lines of community care.
