SuperGrans Back2Basics Felting Workshops

SuperGrans Back2Basics in Gore ran a series of felting workshops made possible with support from the Hokonui Hauora Fund, which was used to purchase tools and materials. The workshops taught participants how to felt using sheep wool and a variety of other materials and textures, demonstrating different ways this medium can be incorporated into everyday life. Across the series, 455 people attended, far exceeding expectations, with ages ranging from 15 to 89 and representing a diverse mix of cultures. Attendees came from as far as Mataura, Wyndham, Edendale, Riversdale, Gore, and Invercargill. The workshops were tactile and therapeutic, fostering intergenerational interactions and friendships that have continued outside the sessions.

Participants created a wide variety of items including scarves, slippers, fingerless gloves, hats, handbags, felted soaps, hand-felted pillows, 3D objects, and textured pictures with slow stitching. The workshops were a hub of chatter, laughter, and shared learning, and the joy participants felt when completing an item was a highlight for organisers. The strong interest in learning felting also revealed the need for a larger space, and there are plans to expand the teaching further with a YouTube channel for young parents through The Wright Family Foundation.
