What Are Communication/Core Boards?

Core boards are communication tools that use symbols and commonly used words to support people to express themselves. They are a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and can be used alongside speech or as an alternative to spoken communication.

Core boards are designed for everyone. They can support:

  • Tamariki who are developing language skills

  • People who are non-verbal or have communication difficulties

  • Individuals experiencing temporary communication challenges

  • Whānau who speak different languages

  • Anyone who may benefit from visual support when communicating

Our Communication/Core Boards are bilingual, featuring both te reo Māori and English, helping to create more inclusive spaces while also encouraging everyday use of te reo Māori.

Why Are They Important?

Communication/Core Boards help make our community spaces more welcoming and accessible. By providing different ways to communicate, they support participation, connection, and inclusion for people of all ages and abilities.

Each board uses a consistent layout of everyday "core" words that can be used in many situations, along with a small number of location-specific words that reflect our local environment.
