The Inspiring Wāhine Rural Conference & Events brought rural wāhine together for an empowering, values-based gathering focused on wellbeing, personal growth, and connection. Through pre and post-conference workshops, inspiring conference days, and community activities, the event created a supportive space to share insights, practical strategies, and real-world experiences. One attendee reflected on the atmosphere, saying, “Being able to walk into a room of women not knowing anyone and being able to strike up a conversation with any of them — everyone was so open and friendly.” Held in a rural setting and designed specifically with rural women in mind, the event reflected their realities, celebrated their strengths, and highlighted the important role wāhine play in sustaining rural communities. The Hokonui Hauora Fund supported the conference by contributing to the cost of keynote speaker Dr Denise Quinlan, whose work around wellbeing and strengths aligned closely with the kaupapa and added value for attendees.
The conference encouraged connection, reflection, and learning, helping attendees build practical tools they could take back into everyday life while strengthening relationships across the region. Feedback highlighted the programme itself, with one participant noting “the variety and calibre of speakers, and the wide range of workshops, from thought-provoking to educational to pampering.” Despite lower-than-hoped attendance, the event was delivered by a dedicated volunteer committee whose determination, positivity, and collective effort created a warm, welcoming, and inspiring environment throughout.
