The Māruawai Matariki Celebration 2024, held on Friday 28th June at the Southern Field Days site in Waimamu, brought thousands of people from across the district together to celebrate Matariki. With no entry fees, families enjoyed a day full of performances from kapa haka groups, dance troupes, bands, and duets, showcasing local talent from community groups, primary schools, and colleges. The event created a lively atmosphere where attendees could connect, celebrate Māori culture, and enjoy a fun, family-friendly day.

The Hokonui Hauora Fund helped make the celebration even more enjoyable for tamariki by funding free face painting and the distribution of apples. Children had the chance to get their faces painted and receive a healthy treat, adding to the fun of the day without any financial barriers. The support helped ensure the event was accessible, welcoming, and full of community spirit.
