Despite challenging weather conditions, around 250 people gathered at Tulloch Park in Mataura to celebrate Children's Day, proving that a little rain was no match for strong community spirit. A highlight of the afternoon was the launch of the new Story Walk, created in partnership with the Gore District Council Events and Parks and Reserves teams as part of Parks Week. Featuring the story of Te Rakitauneke and Matamata, written and illustrated by students from Mataura Primary, it provides a lasting legacy that celebrates both local history and the creativity of tamariki.
The day was filled with activities including face painting, Ta Moko body art, outdoor games, handcrafted gifts, fruit cups, a sausage sizzle and BMX demonstrations from Levi Goodall. Support from the Hokonui Hauora Fund helped make the day possible, contributing towards the planned bouncy castle and the free sausage sizzle enjoyed by whānau throughout the afternoon. When weather conditions meant the bouncy castle could no longer go ahead safely, the team quickly pivoted to a kite-themed alternative, ensuring tamariki still had something special to enjoy. Full use of the Mataura Rugby Clubrooms helped keep activities running, and the event became a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the local community. As one organiser reflected, "Our community deserves a free whānau event, and a bit of rain wasn't going to stop us." Another noted that the day showcased "resilience, community connection, and that quintessential Eastern Southland can-do spirit."
